IN DEFENSE OF

THE ARTS

“God has always used varied artistic methods to communicate His power, splendor, and glory. The first dance was His rhythmic movement in the creation of the heavens and the earth. The first act of Mime Ministry was seen in the garden of Eden as God silently crafted a man in His image and likeness. At the completion of His dramatic presentation, as His own audience, He applauded Himself by declaring His work good. On the canvas of the sky, He stroked an awe-inspiring mural still beyond human comprehension. Who do you think taught the morning stars to sing together (Job 38:7) and showed the trees the proper timing by which to clap their hands (Isaiah 55:12)? Beyond a doubt, it is the first Choir Master, God Himself.  Zephaniah 3:17 informs us that He’s also a sermonic soloist. You and I are living epistles read of men; walking, living, breathing sermons, and He rejoices over us with singing.

Voiceless trees have roots, bark, and upward lift that theatrically display His power in nature.  The seas roar as a result of His excessively dramatic performance on the waters, the earth dramaturgically hangs on the word of His power.  The Scriptures that give voice and vocabulary to our praise are all acts on the stage of time expressing the majestic wonder of our God.  So, as we join with creation, our demonstrative emotions expressed in song, instrumentation, and dance are only a re-enactment of what the Creator has already portrayed about Himself.  The Arts originated with Him, and we simply follow suit.”
